Last night I lay awake unable to sleep because I couldn’t remember if Fred Astaire was spelled with an e or not - Astaire or Astair. Then I started thinking about the name Astaire and how it would be a really weird name if it was just a regular person’s last name - like, you never really use the word stair as a singular; they’re either stairs or a step.

But because it’s Fred Astaire the famous guy we always say his full name, as though the whole name runs together, with no attention paid to the last name by itself. So it’s never strange, always familiar. Until you’re lying awake at 3am like a loser hashing it out.

Birthday wrap up was dinner with my family and Lee and it was as perfect as this pavlova they made. We played a heap of songs from the 80s, danced around the living room, and I got a sore stomach from laughing so much which always happens with my family. There’s pretty much nothing better than being around the people who just get you, and love you, and in that time there’s not a problem in the world. Or if there is, you know you can handle it.

Birthday dinner at Il Centro. Lee’s taken me there on each birthday for the last three years, and we both always order their signature dish of sandcrab lasagne at some point. It’s ridiculously good. This time I had the lasagne as entree and a barramundi main.

I’ve pretty much realised I’m a creature of habit. Habits, rituals, routine. I don’t like surprises and I love that Lee understands that about me. I think you can still surprise someone within a framework of familiarity - like when he brings dinner home and knows exactly which drink to choose for me from whichever particular place. It’s the little things.

Last weekend was my birthday, and it started perfectly with fresh flowers and fresh coffee brought straight from the markets to me in bed. Good boyfriend, not so good cats - I drank the coffee, the cats ate the flowers.
